Directions

For the french toast bake:

  1. Grease a 9 x 13-inch (deep) baking dish with the 1 Tablespoon softened butter.
  2. Cut loaf into cubes and place evenly in the baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, lightly beat the eggs.
  4. Whisk in the cream, milk, granulated sugar, and vanilla.
  5. Evenly pour the mixture over the bread.
  6. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

For the topping:

  1. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Cut in the chilled butter with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Place mixture in a Ziploc bag and refrigerate overnight.

For the baking:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the bread.
  3. Place the baking dish in the oven and bake, uncovered, until browned and the inside is set but soft, 40-45 minutes.
  4. Dust with powdered sugar (if using).
  5. Serve warm, with maple syrup if desired.
